The streets of Sarasota were covered in chalk masterpieces from October 28-Nov 6, thanks to the Sarasota Chalk Festival. The event is free for artists and free for voyeurs — it’s designed to draw customers to local businesses. There was no shortage of talent here as artists (including full-time professional street painters) and musicians flocked far and wide because Sarasota is easily Florida’s second artsiest city next to Miami. The theme was Circus City, USA, which is perfect because Sarasota owes its artistic heritage to the famous Ringling circus family, major patrons of the arts whose exceptional fine art collection, Venetian Gothic mansion Cà d’Zan and circus memorabilia now comprise the sprawling Ringling Museum of Art. I wasn’t able to attend the Sarasota Chalk Festival, but my father did and he took these fantastic photos. Thanks, Dad! Enjoy the slideshow below…
Absolutely love this! Wouldn’t it be great if other cities started having similar festivals? They would be a great drawing card for both artists and art lovers.
