When I heard about The Fitzgerald Suite at The Plaza Hotel, I couldn’t get there fast enough. The Great Gatsby movie and The Plaza Hotel are natural partners; not only did Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald frequent the Plaza but a scene from the book and movie takes place there. I was very excited to be invited to take a tour of the suite with Catherine Martin, who designed both The Great Gatsby and the suite.

The Fitzgerald Suite is not a replica of the suite that’s in the movie, explained CM. “That suite was based more on The Oak Room than it was an actual suite because Baz wanted it have a heavy, oppressive kind of feeling.” Also, the scene that takes place in The Plaza suite is not one that makes you yearn to stay there – it’s a fight between Tom and Gatsby over Daisy. “I felt that to recreate that – that maybe it’s not the weekend away from home you want to have with your wife on your anniversary, reliving some terrible past misstep in the your relationship. This room really jockeys fact and fiction really a melding of my fantasy of a Deco room that still meets the luxurious standards we expect in the 21st Century. And it’s a nod to Fitzgerald’s great affection for The Plaza.”

The suite feels so masculine — down to gray monogrammed JG bedding — that it would be perfect for a solo male business traveler except that the sizeable $2795 per night rate includes perks for two such as Bottle of Moët champagne upon arrival, Moët Imperial Gatsby cocktails for two in The Rose Club, breakfast for two in The Palm Court and The Plaza branded set of ‘His & Her’ flasks to take home. The suite has debuted at a considerably higher rate than The Plaza’s first themed suite. The Eloise Suite had an opening rate of $995 in July 2010. But The Fitzgerald Suite, which is outfitted by RH Restoration Hardware, is far more luxurious and detailed than The Eloise Suite. Both suites are on the same floor, just a few doors away from each other so perhaps the parents could stay in The Fitzgerald Suite and the kids could stay in The Eloise Suite. Now that would be an amazing family vacation!
