Betsey Johnson Designs a Brand New Suite for Eloise at The Plaza

As my regular readers know, I don’t usually post photos of myself on Travelogged. But I couldn’t resist this one of me lounging at the brand-new Eloise Suite at The Plaza. No, I didn’t spend the night there — ha, don’t I wish! Yesterday, I went to a press preview of the pinkest room in New York City’s most famous hotel. This was one event I was not going to miss as I love both Betsey Johnson, the clothing designer who designed the room, and Eloise, one of the greatest book characters of all time.

Eloise_doll If you’re not familiar with this iconic children’s series, Eloise is a precocious six-year-old who lives at The Plaza with her British nanny, turtle (Skipperdee) and dog (Weiner). She keeps herself busy by tormenting her French tutor, helping the maids (whether they want it or not), crashing parties and ordering room service.

First published in 1955, the book is printed in three colors — pink, black and white — and Betsey Johnson designed Eloise’s room in this color palate. In her first foray into bedding, she created a duvet with Hilary Knight’s iconic illustrations.

Despite the pint-sized pink tulle frocks available for dress-up, the Eloise suite has a decidedly grown-up price of $995 per night. The cost of the 625-sq.-ft. suite with an interior courtyard view includes a monogrammed Eloise bathrobe, a $100 gift card to the hotel’s Eloise Shop, an Eloise disposable camera, a framed photo of the guest inside the suite and an Eloise book. Parents can book the adjoining one-bedroom suite, bringing to the total to $2,045 a night (pictured right).

Here are more photos of the suite, so you can see all of the luxe details. I also wrote a story that includes an interview with Betsey Johnson for The High Low, a new fashion website.
