I allowed my five year blogiversary to slide by last month with little fanfare so I’m rectifying the situation right now: HAPPY FIVE YEAR BLOGIVERSARY TO TRAVELOGGED! Thank you for coming along on this journey! The blog has morphed from a couples travel blog to a family travel blog, in accordance with my travel style. I started the blog in January 2009 and had my son in November 2010, which allowed me almost two years of traveling with my husband plus a few press trips before there was a third, mostly non-negotiable traveler in tow. I won’t pretend that my travel hasn’t slowed down some in recent times, but I’ve still taken some fantastic trips plus explored locally with renewed zest.
In honor of my five years of blogging, I wanted to share my top 5 experiences from each year… It was hard to choose from 588 blog posts, but I enjoyed reliving my favorite travel moments and hope you will too.
Kayaking in Key West When I launched this blog, I didn’t have a single trip planned. I began my writing about trips that I had recently taken and my friends’ trips. But just a few weeks later, my husband and I went to Key West, which we really enjoyed.
The Ultimate Spa: Relaxing at Tabacon Hot Springs in Costa Rica The first international trip that my husband I took after the blog launch was to Costa Rica, which remains one my favorite destinations. Hope to go back soon as a family trip!
The Best Views in Istanbul Then we took another international trip, our longest to date: Istanbul-Capodoccia-Vienna-Venice-Florence-Rome!
Cliche, Expensive But Totally Worth It: Taking a Gondola Ride in Venice The headline says it all, and nearly five years later I’m still glad I did it.
Skiing Fresh Powder at Park City Mountain Resort 2009 was by far our best year of travel… My husband and I finished off the year with a ski trip to Park City, Utah.
Nottingham 101: Is There a Real Robin Hood? In honor of the remake of Robin Hood, I participated in a press trip to Nottingham with VisitBritain.
The Beach at Siesta Key, FL, Is Gorgeous, Clean and Oil-Free Throughout the five years, I’ve been to the Sarasota, FL, area at least 20 times to visit my parents, who have become snowbirds. We were so thankful that the dreadful BP Oil spill did not affect Siesta Key Beach, the #1 Beach in the USA according to Dr. Beach.
Slideshow: A Helicopter Ride With a Glacier Landing How can I choose just one post from the epic, two-week #FollowMeAtSea Alaska Princess Cruises press trip? It would have to be the day I took a helicopter right outside Denali National Park and walked on a glacier!
Go Manchester United! Can Americans Call It Football, Too? I’m still not sure if I’m allowed to call “soccer” football… My husband is Man U fan, and it was really fun to see them live at their home stadium.
Driving Through the Scottish Highlands After Manchester, we headed north! The Scottish Highlands are simply breathtaking.
Flying With a Baby My son’s first and second flights, at 9 weeks and 12 weeks respectively, to Sarasota, Florida. A true travel milestone. He did great and continues to be a great flyer!
How Humid Is It in the Virgin Islands in June? Our good friends got married at Caneel Bay in St. John, USVI, so my husband and I went by ourselves (sans bebe) for three days for wedding festivities, beach lounging and snorkeling.
Tips for Seeing Newport’s Mansions We rented a house (not a mansion, sadly) in Newport, RI, with another family who had a baby the exact same age — what a great week of beaches and sightseeing!
25 de Abril Bridge: Lisbon’s Version of the Golden Gate Bridge I can’t remember how I convinced my husband that our 11-month-old was ready for Europe, but I’m so glad I did. We were amazed by how easy it was.
Seville’s Spectacular Plaza de Espana After Lisbon, we went to Seville and then Sintra. It’s a good thing that our first family trip to Europe was such a success or there might not have been any more…
Stockholm: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Fotografiska We visited our friends in Sweden, which was a really special experience because we got a true local perspective.
Moosepark in Laganland: On the Road to Skane, Sweden The secret is out: our travel mascot is a moose!
No Photos Please: Welcome to Christiania, Copenhagen’s Freetown We finished off our trip with a few nights in Copenhagen.
Jazz and Colors in Central Park Having a child makes you appreciate destinations that are in your own backyard… And in this case, I mean that literally because Central Park is our backyard.
When Is the Best Time to Go to Miami? DesignMiami! A fabulous workcation at DesignMiami, the international art fair.
Annecy’s Palais de l’Isle: Night and Day Annecy, France, is simply one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. It was the perfect way to kick off our trip through France this past summer.
The World’s Best Kiddie Pool: Terre Blanche in Provence We loved this ultra-luxe, family-friendly resort in Provence.
Italian Indulgence: Tasting Menu at Il Lago at The Four Seasons Geneva Possibly the best meal I’ve eaten in all five years!
2013 SATW Convention Mississippi Gulf Coast: A Short Trip to the Deep South I took a solo trip to speak on a social media panel at the Society of American Travel Writers conference in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Red Lion Inn: A Return to My Very First Hotel My husband and I got a rare night away in Stockbridge, Mass., at the hotel that I last stayed at when I was only nine months old.
I wonder what the next five years will bring…
