Ode to Santorini: The Most Beautiful Island in the Whole World?

Sunset at Oia, Santorini

Whenever I hear of someone visiting Santorini, I feel a twinge of jealousy. Like, how come they get to go there, too? It’s not fair. Only I should get to go there. Even though Santorini is among the most visited islands in Greece, it’s such a special place that it manages to feel like your own little secret despite being a frequent stop on cruise ship itineraries. It’s sort of a like a beautiful, popular person that makes you feel like you’re their special friend even though they have 100’s of friends and you’re not even in the inner circle.

Do YOU think Santorini is the most beautiful island in the whole world?

Do YOU think Santorini is the most beautiful island in the whole world?

I visited Santorini in June 2008, more than six months before I began I’ve been to a lot of places since then, and I still think that Santorini may be most the beautiful island in the whole world. Of course that’s an exaggeration, and there are so many more islands that I need to visit. In Greece, we only made it to three of the Cyclades (Santorini, Naxos and Paros), so I can’t even say with certainty that it’s the most beautiful island in Greece. But look at these photos… Can’t I at least assume that Santorni is the most beautiful island in the world? It’s not just its physical beauty, but the way the white houses are embedded into the cliffs.

The Red Beach in Santorini really is red!

The Red Beach in Santorini really is red!

Santorini is a very romantic place; my husband and I went there before we had our son. Even though we were relatively active for Santorini (making it to the Red Beach and a boat tour to Nea Kameni), we still did a lot of relaxing. I started daydreaming about visiting Santorini again when I was browsing through the luxury hotels on Splendia. Santorini is not an easy place to get to from New York City, but I have no doubt that I will revisit it eventually. And I want to explore more Greek islands too, like Crete, Corfu and Rhodes. But only if I can go to Santorini once more!

Have you ever been to Santorini? What did you think of it?

I’ve been to Santorini twice, once in 1997 and again in 2012. It is physically beautiful but it is so intensely touristy that I don’t think I will ever go back. Watching busloads of Japanese tourists jostling for space to get the perfect sunset photo, it certainly didn’t feel like a secret to me at all.

I highly recommend you check out Samos and Patmos, which are also beautiful but not quite as touristy. Lower prices too! If you want to get even more off the beaten track, I also really like Syros and Thassos, but then again, there are dozens of wonderful Greek islands so it’s hard to go wrong.

Having been there only once, and not even for a full day since I was visiting during a cruise- I cannot wait to go back. No matter where you look- the landscape and colors are stunning. I would love to stay and explore the many colors of sunrise and sunset from different spots on the island.

This looks gorgeous. I would really love to visit Greece. I feel like we are so close, but yet so far away. One day!

This is one of my dream destinations. I think it’s one of the reasons I like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants so much.

Whilst I’ve never been to Santorini I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the place. My wife loves it too.

Your pictures certainly show some of the beauty of the place. I will get there one day, I promise.
