Whenever I hear of someone visiting Santorini, I feel a twinge of jealousy. Like, how come they get to go there, too? It’s not fair. Only I should get to go there. Even though Santorini is among the most visited islands in Greece, it’s such a special place that it manages to feel like your own little secret despite being a frequent stop on cruise ship itineraries. It’s sort of a like a beautiful, popular person that makes you feel like you’re their special friend even though they have 100’s of friends and you’re not even in the inner circle.
I visited Santorini in June 2008, more than six months before I began Travelogged.com. I’ve been to a lot of places since then, and I still think that Santorini may be most the beautiful island in the whole world. Of course that’s an exaggeration, and there are so many more islands that I need to visit. In Greece, we only made it to three of the Cyclades (Santorini, Naxos and Paros), so I can’t even say with certainty that it’s the most beautiful island in Greece. But look at these photos… Can’t I at least assume that Santorni is the most beautiful island in the world? It’s not just its physical beauty, but the way the white houses are embedded into the cliffs.
Santorini is a very romantic place; my husband and I went there before we had our son. Even though we were relatively active for Santorini (making it to the Red Beach and a boat tour to Nea Kameni), we still did a lot of relaxing. I started daydreaming about visiting Santorini again when I was browsing through the luxury hotels on Splendia. Santorini is not an easy place to get to from New York City, but I have no doubt that I will revisit it eventually. And I want to explore more Greek islands too, like Crete, Corfu and Rhodes. But only if I can go to Santorini once more!
Have you ever been to Santorini? What did you think of it?
