Lots of people watch The Amazing Race. Some people (not me!) think to themselves, “I could do that,” and then they apply to be on the show. But the truly brave seek out their own amazing race, like the Mongol Rally, an epic car journey that spans from London to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Rick Griffin of Midlife Roadtrip, Sheryl Ott of Ottsworld and Dave Bouskill and Debra Corbeil of The Planet D are four truly brave travel bloggers, and they’ve formed their own team, The Social Media Syndicate, signed up for the Mongol Rally, secured a car (which they’ll leave in Mongolia as a gift to Adventures in Development) and obtained a laundry list of visas. In this 10,000-mile race, there will be no camera crew following them, no team of medics ready to intervene and no Phil Keoghan welcoming them at every stop with his charming New Zealand accent.
Also, unlike The Amazing Race, there is no $1 million waiting for the winner at the end. There is money involved, but it goes to the charity. So far The Social Media Syndicate has raised over $4,500 for the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation, which serves underprivileged children in Mongolia and Vietnam.
But this is one expensive trip and the team needs your help with gas costs, equipment and other necessities. They’ve partnered with Intrepid Travel, a terrific tour operator, to hold the Rally Raffle. It’s just $5 to enter and you can win your choice of two Intrepid trips: Wild Mongolia or Inca Trail. To enter, visit the Social Media Syndicate site (where you can read all of the fine print) or just click on the image to your left! For every $5 that you donate, your name will be entered in the online drawing. Increase your odds of winning by donating $25 and you have 5 chances to win. The Rally Raffle runs from June 6, 2011, until Midnight PST on June 12, 2011.
The Mongol Rally starts in just 45 days and I’m really looking forward to reading the updates on the Social Media Syndicate blog and on Facebook and Twitter. I spent two weeks with Deb, Dave and Rick on the Alaska Twitter Press Trip with Princess Cruises (aka #FollowMeAtSea) and their love of adventure and their up-for-anything personalities are matched only by their writing, photography and filming talents. I also had the chance to meet Sherry at a TBEX event in NYC and she was great too.
At times, I’ll be very jealous of their Mongol Rally escapades — like when they spend the night in Dracula’s Castle. But at other times — like when they’re driving without paved roads (or any roads?!) through untamed desert — I’ll probably be thankful that I’m following along on their adventures from my computer screen and not from the backseat.
