Sri Lanka emerged as one of the hottest travel destinations for 2010. It was no. 1 on the New York Times‘ The 31 Places to Go in 2010, and it was also
on Conde Nast Traveler‘s 2010 It List. The civil war ended in May and the island is ready to be enjoyed for its pristine beaches, ancient Buddhist temples, lush waterfalls and wildlife preserves. It sounds like an incredible place to visit and now you have the chance to win a dream trip for you and nine friends.
The Sri Lanka Tourist Board has devised a fun and interesting contest at www.visitsrilanka-2011.com where you submit an itinerary of what you would do on your trip. Creating an itinerary is hard to do when you don’t know anything about a place, but luckily you build the itinerary by dragging and dropping various activities into “morning” and “afternoon” slots.
For example, on the morning of day one you could go to the Golden Temple and then in the afternoon you could go to the Hikkadua beach. I have no idea if it’s feasible to do those two in one day (it probably isn’t) but the itinerary builder lets you make any combination you want. However, it may pay to do some research because 40% of your score is determined by how creative, practical and diverse the judges consider your itinerary to be.
The rest of your score is based on participation. You can earn participation points by posting a photo or video of Sri Lanka on the website, commenting on the articles and creating more itineraries.
I’m really impressed by this contest’s use of interactivity — this is no simple sweepstakes. I think it has real potential to educate people about Sri Lanka and encourage them to spread the word. It’s mandatory to send out five e-cards extolling the wonders of Sri Lanka, and you get an a participation point for every additional e-card you send out.
I’m also impressed by the prize: an all-expenses-paid trip for the winner and nine others! So, what are you waiting for? The contest goes from February 1st through March 7th, and the winner will be announced by the end of April. The prize will be valid from May 2010 through October 2011. You can enter here. If you win, please consider taking me as one of your nine guests…
