Saying that the best pizza in Park City is served at a nightclub might sound like I'm trying to insult the level of pizza available in Utah's premiere ski town. But no, it just so happens that Sidecar, one of Park City's most popular nightclubs, serves excellent pizza.
I know, I know. I was skeptical too. Especially because the Sidecar is tucked away on the second floor of a mini-mall on Main Street. And then my confidence was hardly boosted when I went to there last Friday night and didn't see anyone eating any pizza — they were just hanging around and drinking, waiting for the band to start.
But my husband and I had gone there based on a recommendation from a trustworthy source, so we were going to order the pizza no matter what. (Plus it's the only food they serve, and we were hungry.)
Sidecar calls its pizza Fat Kid Pizza and describes it as New York—style. This didn't make me feel any better, because as a New Yorker I'm almost always disappointed whenever pizza is described as New York—style. We ordered a pie that was half pepperoni and half Da Fat Kid, which was pepperoni, ricotta and spinach. Then we hoped for the best and watched the band set up.
We didn't have to wait too long for our pizza to appear. The moment we saw it, we completely relaxed because it looked fantastic. (I don't think that top photo does it justice.) The crust was so thin and crispy that at first we thought it was cooked in a brick oven. But no, it was made in a standard metal pizza oven. The cheese, the toppings, the sauce and the crust (which had some cornmeal on the bottom — always a nice touch) were all outstanding. Believe me, this New York—style pizza would be a big hit in New York.
We would have been content with just the pizza, but then the band began to play and they were really great too. The Neighbors is a fun local cover band that plays classics by Tom Petty, The Beatles and more. The Sidecar has live music or DJs most nights. If you're in Park City and you like pizza and music, don't miss out on this sort-of-hidden gem.
