Hot Chocolate at the St. Regis Deer Crest Resort

After a day of skiing, I crave hot chocolate. And after a day of skiing at the luxurious Deer Valley Resort, I wanted a luxurious hot chocolate from the St. Regis Deer Crest Resort. I didn’t know exactly where it was; all I knew was that it opened last year and St. Regis hotels tend to be pretty posh.

Well, it turned out that I saw the St. Regis as soon as I got to Deer Valley, only I didn’t know what I was looking at. From the parking lot by Snow Park Lodge, I saw tracks going up the hill and I wondered what they were for. Then, I spent the day skiing and didn’t give the track another thought. At the end of the day, we asked for driving directions to the St. Regis and they told us to just take the funicular near the lodge. Ah, so that’s what that was… (You can also ski right to the hotel, but not from where we were at the time.)

The funicular ride was pretty cool — on the way down it felt like a slow-motion roller coaster. (Speaking of which, I’m sad I didn’t end up riding the Alpine Coaster at Park City Mountain Resort, sigh.) It’s worth it to check out the St. Regis for the funicular ride alone, kind of like how it’s worth it check out the Hotel Cipriani in Venice just to ride on their vintage wooden boat to Guidecca.

When we got up to the hotel, the St. Regis Bar was quite crowded and there was nowhere to sit.
Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who wanted to check out the swanky bar. As we walked to the end of the room, we noticed an outdoor area with seats that was completely empty. That was the Terrace Cafe and it was about to close for the day, but we managed to get out there and get our hot chocolates before it did. The drinks were extremely thick and chocolaty, perfect for apres ski.

It all worked out for the best, because as you can see from the picture above, the Terrace has incredible views and a gas fire to keep the guests warm. I’m not sure how long I could have sat out there in jeans and a coat, but I was still in full ski clothing so I was perfectly comfortable. In fact, it was hard to leave… Below is a slideshow of the funicular and the terrace.

It sound so nice, I think I’d have spent more time sipping the hot chocolate than ski-ing

The best hot chocolate that I’ve ever had is Williams and Sonoma’s Lots of fat sugar and calories…but that’s what makes it taste so good.

What a gorgeous picture. I could easily picture myself sipping some of that hot chocolate overlooking the firey rocks on that terrace. I am not a skier, but I could get used to soaking up that wonderful view.
