Cheering On (and Eating Along) the NYC Marathon

Tomorrow, people from all over the world will be running the marathon in New York City. Runners who come from far and wide always say there is no better to place to run a marathon because not only does the course take you all over the city but because the cheering spectators help keep them motivated. Whether or not they know people who are participating, New Yorkers come out in force to applaud those who are running 26.2 miles. But it’s not just locals who out there; usually over 2 million people line the streets to cheer on the 39,000 racers.

If you’re planning to be a spectator tomorrow, you might be interested in checking out a story I wrote last year when I was on staff at Zagat called The Marathon Spectator’s Guide. It lists 26 great eateries located along the race route in strategic spots so you can refuel, warm up and then go right back outside and cheer.

I was in New York last week and Central Park appeared a practising arena for would be runners even in the rain. This in itself was inspiring so I can imagine the spirit the Marathon must be generating.

We were there yesterday cheering on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, one block from our apartment. It’s truly an amazing event if you’ve never seen it in person. The runners start as a trickle, with the elites, but then there are literally thousands and thousands and runners for miles. My four year old son got a kick out of the tv helicopters and police motorcycles too, but the best part was having the runners slap his hand as they made their way through Brooklyn.
