Hawaii Honeymoon: Driving the Road to Hana

(Waianapanapa State Park in Maui; all photos by Maggie Overfelt Valentine)

When I visited Maui on my honeymoon, we didn’t make it through the entire Road to Hana, a drive that has become a popular rite of passage for visitors to the island. Maui’s Highway 360 (aka Hana Highway or Road to Hana), features more than 50 miles of hairpin curves from Kahului to the bucolic, cattle-filled town of Hana. We drove part way, admired the cliffs, walked to a waterfall or two, kept driving and then decided that we would rather be laying on the beach than sitting in the car. But Danny and Maggie Overfelt Valentine, who honeymooned in Maui in May after spending some time in Kauai, drove through every twist and turn and loved it.

Driving to Hana isn’t for the fainthearted; there are more than 30 one-lane bridges. But the rewards are great: varied vistas, tropical flowers, fruit stands and hundreds of natural waterfalls. Here are Maggie’s photos from their unforgettable drive.

We recently did a partial attempt to drive the road to Hana in June. We were in Maui for my brother’s wedding and had the baby with us. We got about 1/2 way, then decided to turn back. Part of this decision was due to time, but also due to a fussy baby. It was beautiful what we did see, and I’d love to go the whole way one day. Thanks for writing about it, this brings back good memories!

We loved Hana – though the drive not so much. It was our favorite part of Maui and if you go back, you should definitely try and spend a couple of days in Hana. You can read about our trip to Hana here:

I could not go to Hawaii for my honeymoon because of the tickets!! I got married last year the 28th of december and five months prior to the wedding there were no airplane tickets from L.A. to hawaii!!
I ended up in cartagena and dont regret it at all! It was a wonderful experience and we had time to know all the gorgeous places of the old city, plus wonderful restaurants &beutiful people:

The drive to Hana, while considered highly touristy nowadays, is still one of our favorite things to do on the island. For our last trip, we spent a night at the Hotel Hana-Maui, giving us 2 full days to enjoy all the sights and beaches along the way.
It definitely lives up to the hype.
