Paracas, Peru: Where the Desert Meets the Coast

When people think of Peru, they don’t usually think of sea lions and penguins. But when Amanda Lobell and Neil Roach took a trip to Peru at the end of December, they made Pisco their first stop after they landed in Lima. They found Pisco to be rundown (because of the earthquake in 2007) but a good place to join a day tour to the Ballestas Islands and Paracas Park. They took a boat through the Ballestas (also known as the mini Galapagos Islands) where they saw sea lions lounging on rocks and penguins resting on the beach. The sun came out after the two-hour boat ride, just in time for the group to walk through Paracas Park, a peninsula where the desert goes right up to the Pacific coastline. Below are Amanda’s photos; to read about the rest of their trip, click here.
